A brother and sister very young plant a tree seed. They come back often to nurture the tree and have it grow. It is their friend.
One day they pitch a tent next to it to camp overnight. They dont wake up.
They are in the dream world together. Live out their entire lives without realizing they are in a dream. They are very happy.
The father, in real life, tries everything he can to wake them up. There is a battle of people between modern science and wholistic remedy.
The wholistic believe that if they are moved from under the tree where they fell asleep, they will be lost forever. Modern science wants to move them to a hospital. After not many hours modern science wants to move them by force. There is a big fight. Guns are drawn by the local sheriff to allow the children to be taken to a hospital. The father stops them just in time before they are moved. Something happens and the boy wakes up and asks for oranges, completely oblivious to having been asleep for a few days. The girl never wakes up.
The boy grows to a man. One day he has a dream that the girl visited him. He a man, she still a little girl, told him that she and the tree miss him. She asks if he remembers how happy they were, referring to the lifetime in the dream. He says he is trying but can't. She says to come sleep under the tree. She will show him.
The man wakes up in full sweat. Disturbed by the dream he takes off work and goes to the tree which is now gigantic. He pitches a tent and sleeps under it. In his dream the girl does visit him but doesn't show him happiness. She has been stuck in a nightmare ever since he woke up and she didnt. She is afraid and lonely in an empty world of only herself in an empty house next to the tree. The man tries to wake up but she won't let him. While she makes him feel the fear and despair she has had to live an eternity for - she and the boy had lived one full lifetime in the span of 2 real days - he is an adult talking to a little girl. She convinces him to stay and they could be happy forever again, he becomes a little boy again.
In real life the man dies under the tree. After an investigation they find that the tree roots damaged a gas line underground which is what sent them into a coma both as children and now as an adult.
